The annual sardine run is thought to have originated along the west coast of South Africa. The first sardine processing factories were built along this coast before the sardines were fished out.
Due to change in currents and temperature, the sardine stocks on the west coast have recovered in recent years. This abundance of sardines attracts marine predators such as Common Dolphins, Dusky Dolphins, Humpback Whales and Minky Whales as well as various shark species. Marine birdlife is abundant too with Cape Gannets, Roseate Terns and Cormorants being some of the birds you may see.
